Emotionally irresistible (that’s the image’s appeal
If it is invisible like wallpaper, decide what element is worthy of becoming dominant.
Intellectually stimulating, interesting (that’s to promise benefits)
If the cover pops out from its background, don’t weaken it by fussing with it.

#32 Vogue (May 2004)
Photographer Irving Penn captures Nicole Kidmans back profile dressed in a Christian Lacroix oyster satin backless dress for this cover of the May 2004 issue of Vogue. This was the first cover shoot for Vogue by Penn since 1989. The issue contains more photographs of Kidman dressed as a Grecian goddess, an Italian diva and as legendary actress Sarah Bernhardt.

Nicole Kidman is posing in a very formal posture facing away from the camera. The photographer seems like they are trying to catch the elegance of the dress as well as hair and the make-up. The background is somewhat faded and keeps the whole portrait simple. The lighting isn't very heavy, and is more towards the background. The portrait's main focus was the elegance on the cover. So without the loud background or large subtitles, it draws your attention to the model in the cover.
